The Legacy Scholarship

College money for the kids of those who serve.

What the Scholarship Is

The ALR Post 259 Legacy Scholarship is a college scholarship for graduates of eligible local high schools whose parent enlisted in the armed forces on or after September 11, 2001, or serves as an active first responder. It is open to students in Otsego, Delaware, and Chenango counties.

The scholarship fund is supported by our annual Legacy Run and by other fundraising activities throughout the year. Together, these efforts help us provide scholarships to local students.

Who Is Eligible

You can apply for the Legacy Scholarship if all of the following are true:

  • You are the legal child of a service member, veteran, or active first responder whose service began on or after September 11, 2001.
  • Your parent is on active duty, is a veteran, or is an active first responder.
  • You live in Otsego, Delaware, or Chenango County.
  • You are a high school senior or a high school graduate.
  • You are considered of good moral character.

What to Include

  • A copy of your high school transcript.
  • If your parent is a veteran, a copy of their DD-214.
  • If your parent is an active first responder, a letter from their chief officer.

How to Apply

  1. Download the application below and complete it. All applications must be typed.
  2. Save the completed application.
  3. Mail it with your required documents to ALR Post 259, ATTN: Legacy Scholarship, 279 Chestnut Street, Oneonta, NY 13820, or email it to riders@alrpost259.org.

The information on your application is used by the Scholarship Committee only and is held in strict confidence. Recipients are asked to attend an ALR meeting to receive the award.

Who is eligible for the Legacy Scholarship?
You are eligible if you are the legal child of a service member, veteran, or active first responder whose service began on or after September 11, 2001, you live in Otsego, Delaware, or Chenango County, and you are a high school senior or a high school graduate.
Do I have to be the child of a veteran?
No. Children of active duty service members, veterans, and active first responders all qualify, as long as that service began on or after September 11, 2001.
When can I apply?
Applications for the 2026 to 2027 school year are accepted after January 1, 2027.
What do I need to submit with my application?
A copy of your high school transcript. If your parent is a veteran, a copy of their DD-214. If your parent is an active first responder, a letter from their chief officer. All applications must be typed.
Where does the scholarship money come from?
Every dollar is raised at the 9/11 Legacy Run, the motorcycle run American Legion Riders Post 259 holds each September.
